Triticeae Research Institute (TRI), Sichuan Agricultural University in Dujiangyan city of Sichuan province was found in 1984. In May 2008, TRI was moved from Dujiangyan to Wenjiang of Chengdu, Sichuan Province. TRI contains three research sections, viz. wheat molecular genetics and transgenic breeding, wheat cytogenetics and chromosome engineering breeding, and Systematics of Triticeae and germplasm exploiting.
Among 40 employees, 32 persons are directly involved in research activities. The faculty includes 15 professors and 7 associate professors. Among them, one was entitled as the National Outstanding Senior Expert, four were recognized as the experts of Special Allowance of Chinese Government, three were selected as the academic candidates of the state Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Project, four was chosen as member of New Century Excellent Talents in University of the Chinese Ministry of Education, four were awarded as the specialists of Outstanding Contribution to Sichuan Province, and five were selected as members of Academic and Technical Leader of Sichuan Province.
More than 700 papers and 10 books have been published. Of which, more than 300 papers were published in the international publications. Twelve scientific and technological prizes have been awarded, one for the First Class Prize of National Invention in 1990 by Chinese government, one for the Second Class Prize of National Scientific Invention in 2000 by Chinese government, and two for the First-class Award of Sichuan Scientific Advancement in 1999 and 2006 by Sichuan Province government, respectively. Six new wheat cultivars have been respectively released in recent years.
Ninety-two students have obtained PhD degrees from this institute. Two doctoral theses, the molecular biology of some special wheat germplasms and Molecular cloning of high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit genes from Aegilops species, were selected as the National Excellent Doctoral Thesis by Ministry of Education of China in 2003 and 2004, the highest honor for doctoral theses in China.
Teachers from this institute take undergraduate courses of General Biology, Introduction to Biology, Plant Breeding, and Advances of Life Sciences and graduate courses of Advanced Plant Breeding, Systematics and Taxonomic of Poaceae, Systematics of Triticeae, and Molecular Biology and Breeding of Wheat.
The institute is active in international cooperation and exchanges with Japan Kihara Biology Research Institute, Japan State Genetic Research Institute, California University, Michigan University, Missouri Arboretum, South Dakota State University, Canadian Biology Resources and Soil Research Center, Sweden Agricultural Science and Technology University, Denmark Royal Farming and Herd University, Cambridge Laboratory of England, Chinese Academy of Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science, Sichuan University, Jilin Agricultural University, ect. More than 100 foreign scholars visited this institute. Half of staffs in this institute once went abroad for study or cooperation research.
In April 1991, the former general secretary of the CPC Jiang Zemin inspected this institute and gave a high appraisal for the great achievements on wheat researches.
